Growing up in a challenging environment as the child of a struggling single mother, Dr. Alemany experienced firsthand the struggles of poverty. Her mother, a trauma surgeon in Cuba, made the courageous decision to move to the United States, hoping to provide a brighter future for her two children.

After relocating, she worked as a surgeon in Costa Rica, where she provided support not only for her family but also guidance to her teenage daughter in the United States as she navigated her educational path.
